Body styling

Everyone’s body is different. How boring it would be if we all looked the same. What matters is to work creatively with your body to maximize all your good points and minimize your bad ones. That may mean looking at foundation garments, bras and underwear in general. One needs to look critically at what kinds of clothes suit you. Some people look great in trousers; others should avoid them at all costs. Short skirts, long skirts, tight sweaters, loose clothing all have their place on the right body. You need to learn what suits you and your body from an outside perspective. Jane will advise you on all these matters.

How to make all those future purchases work for you — avoid those costly mistakes!

Buying something that looks great on the rail and good in the changing room can sometimes mysteriously turn into something that is far from great when we try it on in the privacy of our bedrooms! If we recognize it straight away as a “mistake” we can return the offending garment, get our money refunded and start again without being out of pocket. The problems begin when we think, “Oh it might be OK and I do like the colour/style/cut etc” (even if we have numerous other reservations) and push it into the wardrobe to await an occasion to wear it — all too often an occasion that we know will never arise!

Sometimes we will wear the item and although we know that we will never enjoy wearing it or feel remotely good in it, we will still grudgingly give it an airing from time to time — this helps us lay our guilt to rest, after all, it was expensive but we have got some wear out of it haven’t we? However, what happens far more often is that we KNOW we will never wear the item but have left it too late to take it back, or, worse still, start wearing it, and then realize that we HATE it!! Too late, we are stuck with it, so to assuage our guilt we hide it in the dark recesses of the wardrobe and try to avoid looking at it too often. Occasionally we will take it out, look at it, think “Oh my God, why did I ever buy this”, lack the courage to bin it like we know we should and “hey presto” its back in it’s place ready to gather more dust, taking up space that could be used to hang something we adore and worst of all, perpetuating that feeling of guilt!

If any of this is familiar to you Jane can help you to root out those mistakes and banish them from taking up valuable cupboard space in the future! From now on, let fashion mistakes be someone else’s problem!

Matching your personality with your wardrobe

Your lifestyle and personality are unique to you. Your wardrobe should reflect your lifestyle, and, most importantly, your personality. The hardest working and most effective wardrobes only contain clothes that the wearer always (well, nearly always, we are women after all!) feels great in and this enables them to live their lives, confident in the realization that because they look good they feel good. Our lives are stressful enough without the added worry that our choice of clothes is letting us down. The social situation added to the person equals the choice of apparel. And that choice is not always as straightforward as it seems. Let Jane help you match your personality to your wardrobe.

Head to Toe advice

This section will advise on grooming and will also seek to avoid “bad hair days” by looking objectively at your hairstyle if deemed necessary — could a change of colour or style be the crowing glory of the new you? A hair re–vamp can literally turn the clock back years. A visit to a good, creative hair stylist for an up to date assessment of your current hairstyle could be worth its weight in gold. While one should not be a slave to fashion we all know someone who should have restyled what was once a terrific hairstyle. Life moves on, so must we. Be prepared to embrace new ideas and suggestions or at least consider them. It could turn out to be liberating. Not all of them will work but it will be fun finding out which ones will!

From “Ordinary” to “Spectacular” using brilliant accessories

Some events cry out for Armani, Prada or some other top designer, but great looks can often be built using chain store clothes but with a creative twist. The combination of a fairly innocuous “base” i.e. dress or trousers and top for instance and some cleverly chosen accessories like stunning modern jewellery or beautiful scarf or belt can add up to a “wow” outfit. If the “base” already exists in your wardrobe and is something which suits your shape, but has just become a bit tired and boring, this is perfect for building on. Sales can be an excellent place to discover wonderful accessories at a fraction of the usual price. These purchases can transform the dull “base”. By the time you have added a pair of fabulous shoes (always brilliant bargains in the sales) or handbag or fantastic piece of jewellery, no one is going to notice the “base”. They will be too busy admiring the new addition/s, which have elevated this outfit to a wonderful new look. Your “base” will in effect have become a blank canvas onto which the most wonderful artwork can be “painted”.

How to create the right outfit for the right event

Not many of us are lucky enough to be invited to a Buckingham Palace Garden Party but if you were, would you know what to wear? Never be afraid to seek advice regarding dress code when an invitation comes in calling for “black tie” or “smart casual” for example. It can mean different things depending on the level of the occasion. The last thing you want is to look out of place. If you want to create a sensation make sure it is on your terms and not because you misread the situation. Looking and feeling out of place is the loneliest place on earth, and can ruin what should have been a fabulous occasion. How can you enjoy yourself when you wish the earth would open up and swallow you? Not to mention wanting to strangle that totally appropriately dressed woman who is laughing and having fun! Become that woman and always look dressed for the part.
